What is firmware?

Firmware is an embedded software much like a BIOS/UEFI for the motherboard. It provides electronic devices with crucial sets of software instructions. Without firmware, electronic devices would lack the "knowledge" of how to function. In SSD's, firmware is responsible for how the drive communicates with the system it is installed in, handles TRIM, Garbage Collection, and manages how data is being distributed among the drive's capacity.
